TORONTO, ON (January 21, 2024) -- Free Geek Toronto (FGT) is pleased to announce it has received an Ontario Trillium Foundation Resilience Communities Fund grant of $32,500 to recover and rebuild the organization’s resiliency from the impacts of COVID-19. This generous grant will allow FGT to increase accessibility to affordable technology for grassroots communities and organizations through improvements to our Refurbished Computers for Social Change Organizations.
With the support of this grant for our project, Refurbished Computers for Social Change Organizations, Free Geek Toronto is building a more efficient ordering and fulfillment process. This will improve FGT’s ability to supply low-cost, refurbished computers to the community organizations and the households they serve. This project will help us get closer to realizing our mission of offering green solutions to unwanted and end-of-life technology and working with partners to increase digital inclusion in our city.
“Providing refurbished computers for non-profit and community organizations is key to increasing digital inclusion and bridging the digital divide. The global pandemic emphasizes the importance of organizations having access to affordable, reliable, internet-ready devices to ensure equity of service”, said Ryan Fukunaga, Free Geek Toronto’s Executive Director.
Free Geek Toronto is a not-for-profit technology reuse organization that promotes a circular economy, extends product life, and reduces our reliance on virgin materials. Free Geek Toronto seeks out unwanted electronics for reuse and refurbishment, selling them at accessible prices or ethically recycling items that cannot be reused or refurbished. Free Geek Toronto also works with partners to increase digital inclusion in our city. More information and details on the grant recognition event can be found at freegeektoronto.org.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation's (OTF) mission is to build healthy and vibrant communities throughout Ontario by investing in community-based initiatives and strengthening the impact of Ontario’s non-profit sector.
