TORONTO, ON (September 30, 2024) -- Free Geek Toronto (FGT) is pleased to announce it has received a Community Services Recovery Fund (CSRF) grant to modernize our Financial System and Processes.
Free Geek Toronto’s volunteer set up its accounting processes over a decade ago. Over the years, the software used changed, but little was done to change the processes, leading to multiple levels of duplication that required more staff time to reconcile accounts. CSRF funding was used to bring in consultants who strategized and executed a move to QuickBooks Online, automate tasks, and remove process duplication while still adhering to industry-standard bookkeeping practices.
The results have been dramatic. Since starting the process, FGT’s administrative team has spent 80% less time running payroll and 50% less on other bookkeeping tasks. FGT’s ability to create timely financial reports has also been greatly affected, allowing for better operation and strategic planning. This has freed up staff to focus on service delivery, including launching the Technology for Social Change program to offer additional support to community organizations through bulk purchases of affordable refurbished computers.
Free Geek Toronto is a not-for-profit technology reuse organization that promotes a circular economy, extends product life, and reduces our reliance on virgin materials. It seeks out unwanted electronics for reuse and refurbishment, selling them at accessible prices or ethically recycling items that cannot be reused or refurbished. Free Geek Toronto also works with partners to increase digital inclusion in our city. More information and details on the grant recognition event can be found at freegeektoronto.org.
This project was funded by the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund.
